Kail Lowry is detailing the conversation she had with ex Jo Rivera after their son Elliottcame out on her podcast.
The New York Times bestselling author, 33, got candid about the subject while chatting exclusively with Parade. Elliott (born Isaac), 15, came out as gay in a two-part episode on Lowry’s “Barely Famous” podcast, which is brought to fans by the KILLR Podcast Network, after photos of him and his prom date were leaked online.
“Jo and I had a really good conversation [the other day], and you know, he said that he listened to the episodes. He was really proud of Elliott, and he said that he was happy,” Lowry says. “He was perfectly fine with the questions that were being asked. He understands why Elliott wanted to do it … I had the conversation with him, and he came up to me, you know? And he said that he’s supportive of it.”
As for how Elliott feels after sharing his story and journey, the Chapter 7 Book Club founder tells Parade that he feels like a weight is lifted off his shoulders.
“I think that he feels a sense of relief. And that's what he sort of told me. He was like, ‘I just want to help one person. If I could do that, then I feel like I did what I was supposed to do,’” she says. “You know, as unfortunate as it is that his boyfriend and his pictures were leaked, I think that he feels [relieved] that he can sort of live authentically, both publicly and privately now.”
In addition to her “Barely Famous” podcast, Lowry also co-hosts the Webby Award-winning “Coffee Convos” podcast with Lindsie Chrisley, as well as “Karma & Chaos,” bringing in more than 1 million monthly listeners to the KILLR Podcast Network, which produces a total of six shows.
