Kellen Moore can break a notable NFL Draft trend if the New Orleans Saints pick a particular rookie QB to replace Derek Carr

The New Orleans Saints may be the most intriguing team for the 2025 NFL Draft. Following the surprising Derek Carr news, they're firmly in the QB market when it comes to rookies. Shedeur Sanders may be on the board for them at the ninth overall pick, too.

If New Orleans took the Colorado QB, they would also break an interesting trend for the league.

Shedeur Sanders' unique opportunity

If the Saints choose Sanders, he will be the first QB prospect to get taken by a team who did not host that player for a top-30 visit or private workout. Kyle Borgognoni was all over this intriguing statistic for both Sanders and the Saints.

Sanders has met with the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and Pittsburgh Steelers in some capacity. Accordingly, this sort of trend cannot be broken if he lands with one of those squads.

The Saints are still the betting favorites to select Sanders, just ahead of the Steelers and Giants - most closely.

A wild but true stat: The #Saints haven’t used a first- or second-round pick on a QB since 1971, when they took Archie Manning. That’s by far the longest streak in the NFL. Over 50 years without investing a 1st or 2nd in the game’s most important position. Crazy to think about. -- Ari Meirov

Kellen Moore's decision

If Sanders is not the selection at ninth overall, it is still a strong belief that the Saints head coach lands a young, new QB sometime early in this year's draft. If Derek Carr is not in the fold next season, as now expected, New Orleans' hand is a bit forced to have another starting option alongside Spencer Rattler.

They cannot enter next year, solely with Rattler as the only legitimate option for Moore's offense. It just is not realistic - nor smart - for the Saints.
