Kellen Moore confirms suspicion and makes his hire at defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints have their next play-caller on defense. Kellen Moore has made his choice for the next DC in New Orleans, and it's a decision that holds both risk and major upside for the youngest head coach in the NFL.

Saints hire Brandon Staley as defensive coordinator

Kellen Moore answers questions at introduction as new head coach

According to multiple sources, the Saints have their next DC. Kellen Moore has connections with Staley, dating back to their time together in 2023 with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Staley was the head coach of the Chargers from 2021-2023 but was fired during the 2023 season. Moore spent just one season in Los Angeles, before joining the Philadelphia Eagles staff this past season.

As a head coach, Staley holds a 24-24 regular season record and a 0-1 record in the postseason.

The best coaching season for Staley so far came in 2020 as the Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator. The Rams were the No. 1 defense in yards and points allowed that season. That success helped him land the Chargers' HC gig.

Moore's relationship with Staley surely played a role in this outcome. Moore has proven to value past coaching experience with multiple notable hires on his staff so far, including OC Doug Nussmeier as well.

New Orleans was a measly 19th in points allowed and 30th in yards last season, so there is plenty of room for improvement in the coming years.

Staley's most recent time as a DC was a massive success, so it may lend well for the future of defense in New Orleans. Staley was a defensive assistant for the San Francisco 49ers in 2024.
