Kellen Moore was widely considered to be one of the best young candidates of this year's coaching cycle before being hired by the New Orleans Saints this week.
Moore, 36, is now the youngest coach in the NFL and the youngest in Saints franchise history. He was viewed as a bright offensive mind as the Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator for five years between 2018 and 2022.
After being the offensive coordinator for the Chargers last season, Moore was hired as the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator this year. He'd be an instrumental part of the Eagles run to a Super Bowl LIX championship, resulting in New Orleans targeting him for the job.
There aren't many who think the Saints got this one wrong. Players, former coaches, and analysts all believe that Moore is the right hire to turn New Orleans around if the franchise and fan base is patient.
One national pundit definitely does not agree. Skip Bayless has taken several shots at Kellen Moore and the Saints for hiring him.
On The Skip Bayless Show two days ago, Bayless ended is broadcast with a four minute segment with his most recent blast of the Saints new coach.
''Are you kidding me...Kellen Moore? Yeah, he can call plays, but he has zero charisma. Nice guy, but zero personality.''
Bayless calls Moore ''uninteresting'' because TV cameras don't pan to him calling plays. He goes on to say that Moore is not a ''natural born leader.'' Bayless does admit that he ''probably would'' take Moore over the Brian Schottenheimer hire in Dallas, but continues to criticize Moore's lack of charisma and ended with:
''I'm here to tell you that he's a nice guy, Kellen Moore, who isn't remotely qualified to be the Saints head coach.''
With those comments, Bayless simply doubled down on other recent criticisms of Kellen Moore. When the Dallas Cowboys parted ways with coach Mike McCarthy in late January, Moore was among those mentioned most often as the potential replacement.
Bayless responded to that possibility on the January 21 edition of the Skip Bayless Show.
''Please don't tell me that Jerry Jones is going to hire Kellen Moore as the (Cowboys) head coach. My pet peeve is that the NFL operates under this crazy notion that good coordinators will make good head coaches.''
''Why? Game-planning or calling plays for an offense or defense has zero to do with head coaching. A head coach has to win over a locker room. When has Kellen Moore ever done any of that?''
After hurling more Moore-related insults that seemed almost personal, Bayless did praise his play-calling. However, he then went on to say:
''Kellen Moore has zero star quality. His personality would fit in Jerry Jones' sock drawer. Actually, Kellen Moore is Jason Garrett/Mike McCarthy - good coordinators but willing to take a backseat to 'head coach' Jerry Jones.''
Someone needs to tell Mr. Bayless that football knowledge and ability is probably more important than charisma. Now, poor Skip has to watch his precious Cowboys be coached by Brian Schottenheimer.
It is worth noting that the Saints replaced a mega-strong personality in Sean Payton with his exact opposite in Dennis Allen. Moore is certainly not a Sean Payton in the charismatic category. However, he's more than earned a head coaching opportunity.
Time will tell if Kellen Moore will be a successful hire in New Orleans. Whatever the result, it's pretty clear that coach Moore and Mr. Bayless will not be exchanging holiday greeting cards in the near future.
