Kellen Moore will change one key trait that has held back the Saints offense

It's much harder to be a good offense when the defense knows what's coming. Kellen Moore should change that

Pro Football Focus' Jason DeLoach recently broke NFL offenses into tiers. They used a sample size was of the last three seasons to paint a picture of how effective each team has been. It should come as no surprise the New Orleans Saints find themselves low on the totem pole.

In his deeper analysis of offenses, DeLoach used the Shannon Entropy, "which measures how predictable an offense is based on schematic tendencies." The publication paired the Shannon Entropy with expected points added per play to break offenses into four categories shown on a graph: good and more predictable, good and less predictable, bad and more predictable, bad and less predictable.

The goal should be to land in the good and less predictable quadrant, but good and more predictable is still acceptable. New Orleans finds itself in the worst quadrant of them all, bad and more predictable. There's hope for change however.

Kellen Moore can help the Saints at least be less predictable

The difficult thing about PFF's model is the sample size is three years. Teams who have had the same offensive play caller over that time frame would get the most out of its findings. The Saints have been bad and predictable over the course of three seasons.

Pete Carmichael and Klint Kubiak have called plays for New Orleans in the last three years, and that's why you needed a change. The difficult part about predicting Kellen Moore's impact in this aspect is he's coached three different offenses in the last three seasons.

The Cowboys, Chargers and Eagles all found themselves in one of the less predictable quadrants. Philadelphia was the most effective, while Los Angeles was the least predictable but also bad.

This model won't tell the full story of Moore's impact, but he did play a part in each of these team's results. It doesn't necessarily mean the Saints will become a good offense in 2025. That still has to do with timing and talent, however, having a play caller who won't be predictable will increase the chances of Saints putting quality offense on the field for the first time in a long time.
