After the devastating news of Triston Casas suffering a ruptured patellar tendon and being out for the remainder of the 2025 season, the Boston Red Sox are now in the market for a new first baseman.
Casas was not having the best season through 29 games, hitting just .182 with six extra-base hits and a low OPS+ of just 64. However, he was Boston's everyday first baseman, and now the team will either have to develop someone within the organization at the position or look elsewhere to find another potential option.
As with any team that suffers a catastrophic injury like this, there is going to be buzz around that team making either a trade or signing a veteran player to fill in.
On Fair Territory, MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal weighed in on the potential first base options out there, and had this to say:
"I'll give you another name too", said Rosenthal. "This guy's not playing, but he's out there. Anthony Rizzo. Rizzo remains a free agent, and I'm quite certain it will take him some time to get into shape, but again this is a season-ending injury to Casas, and who knows they might want to take a shot along those lines."
Rosenthal also explained that there are some doubts with Rizzo, like whether or not he would want to continue playing, and the Red Sox willingness to spend money at this point.
Rizzo played for the New York Yankees in 2024, and while he wasn't as productive as he once was, he did still hit eight home runs in 92 games, and he always plays a solid defensive first base.
He is definitely a name to keep an eye out for as the Red Sox decide what they will do at first base going forward.
