Key Factor Drives the Toronto Maple Leafs Back into the Stanley Cup Contender Conversation

With a strong showing against the Montreal Canadiens that showed just how good Toronto can be even in the face of adversity, things are looking up for the team as they continue to try and stretch their lead in the Atlantic Division.

The team is finally healthy minus Anthony Stolarz, and his return will be imminent in the next few weeks, and although it took a few months into the season, it looks like the Maple Leafs are finally looking like the complete roster fans had hoped for when the year opened.

They did have a bit of a rough patch over the past month however, over the past month (Dec 18 - Jan 18) they've been one of the best teams at lighting the lamp.

Toronto's Scoring Outburst Give Their Stanley Cup Push Hope

Averaging almost three and a half goals over the last month is a great feat of offensive production. Of their last 16 games, Toronto has scored five or more goals, with just as many games where they scored two or less.

Leading the charge has been Mitch Marner with 23 points, followed by William Nylander with 17, not to mention the production from third liners like Nick Robertson and Bobby McMann (8 and 13 goals respectively).

The team has finally started to get their offensive depth going and it can only mean good things for the Leafs going forward.

While the 3.31 GA/GP isn't necessarily the best number, it's hard to say that Joseph Woll hasn't been great, but it just goes to show how important both Anthony Stolarz and the recently returned Jake McCabe are to the team in terms of preventing goals.

Six Maple Leafs players have double-digit goals, John Tavares and Nylander have 20+, and Nick Robertson is only two goals away from being lucky number seven; it's all starting to come together and the results are starting to come to fruition.

If the team can keep up this pace while calming down the amount of goals they give up, it would make their journey to the Stanley Cup a lot easier, and provided they actually get some playoff production this season; it could be the longest journey Toronto's taken toward winning it all.
