Falcons QB Kirk Cousins met with Arthur Blank to discuss NFL future
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins' future has been debated since the team benched him for rookie Michael Penix Jr. in Week 16 of the 2024 season. According to a report from NFL insider Albert Breer, Cousins requested a meeting with Falcons owner Arthur Blank to discuss the team's offseason plans.
Blank reportedly met with Cousins on Wednesday, and according to Breer, the veteran quarterback expressed an interest in playing for a different team, one where he could start next season. General manager Terry Fontenot indicated the team could keep Cousins around in 2025 as a high-priced backup, but few around the league are buying that.
The Falcons are in a tough spot with the veteran quarterback since they have nothing to gain by releasing him at the start of the new league year (except dead cap space). The immediate impact wouldn't be quite as bad if the team waits until June 1 to release him, which many believe is the most likely scenario.
Atlanta's best option is to trade Cousins after June 1, which he would first have to sign off on. While a trade is not completely off the table, it probably wouldn't be Cousins' preferred option. Nonetheless, there should be a healthy amount of teams interested in adding an established veteran this offseason.
The 2025 NFL draft class is not a great year for quarterbacks, which was one of the reasons the Falcons drafted Penix in the first place. It will be interesting to see what happens as a result of Cousins' meeting with Blank.
