The Atlanta Falcons gave up a lot to bring in stability at their quarterback position. They handed Kirk Cousins a monster contract with the hopes that he can be the bridge to their team’s future. Then they drafted Michael Penix Jr. to be his understudy, cementing the most important position for the foreseeable future.
Their initial 6-3 record came about after Kirk Cousins delivered some epic performances. It seemed as if the Falcons had turned a corner and were back to competitiveness. But in the next five games, the 36-year-old threw nine interceptions to just one touchdown.
That performance led the team to lose four straight games. With their playoff hopes dwindling, the Falcons decided to bench Cousins and hand the reins to their rookie QB. Now his career is at the crossroads, with rumors abound that the Falcons are preparing to move on from him.
QB Kirk Cousins asked for, and got, a meeting with Falcons owner Arthur Blank on his future. Blank and Cousins had that meeting Wednesday night—the QB wants to go to a place where he can start in 2025. The Falcons brass has said it’d do what’s best for the team at QB.

Albert Breer’s sources tell him that Cousins met with Falcons owner Arthur Blank hoping to get him to a team where he will be the starter. But any team who wants to move on from a player usually seeks the best assets in return.
Kirk Cousins’ future up in the air with the latest update
Kirk Cousins might be a year away from a torn Achilles injury, but he believes he can still zing it on a nightly basis. The interceptions were a problem, but he believes they can be fixed. But his future is not in his hands anymore, as the Atlanta Falcons are going to do what is best for them.
That means there is a likelihood that he goes to a team where he might have to compete for a starting job. QB needy teams are also high up on the draft board. If one of them trades for Cousins and drafts a QB, it will be a repeat of the situation he faced this season.
The four-time Pro Bowler might prefer to wind up in a place where they need him to start right away. Hopefully, with this crop of QB prospects, Cousins might be able to play a full season before they hand it over to their rookie.
Michael Penix Jr. was Pro ready when he entered the NFL. Therefore, the Falcons decided to hand him the keys with their playoffs on the line. How they deal with teams in the next few days or weeks will determine if Cousins’ future pans out well.
