James portrays the lead character in the BBC drama that released in the UK in October 2024.
Lennie James was recently awarded the BAFTA for Best Leading Actor for his performance in the BBC series Mr. Loverman. James is well known for his roles in The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, Snatch, Save Me, and many more.
One of James' recent projects is Mr. Loverman, an eight-part series adaptation of Bernardine Evaristo's Booker Prize-winning novel. The actor portrays 70-year-old, Antiguan-born Londoner, Barrington Jedidiah Walker, or Barry. His wife of 50 years, Carmel (Sharon D. Clarke), believes her husband has been unfaithful in their marriage, and she is correct. Barry has become involved with his best friend and soulmate, Morris (Ariyon Bakare), which sends their long-time marriage into a chaotic state.
Additional cast members include Tamara Lawrance, Sharlene Whyte, Suzette Llewellyn, Lochlann Ó Mearáin, and Tahl Miles.
The series, which was released on BBC One in October 2024, was directed by Hong Khaou and adapted by Nathaniel Price. US fans will be excited to learn that Deadline reports that BritBox has secured rights to Mr. Loverman. Beginning June 4, BritBox will release two episodes per week in the US and Canada.
In 2006, James portrayed the mysterious Robert Hawkins in the CBS series Jericho. The series was set in the post-apocalyptic fiction town of Jericho, Kansas, after a nuclear attack on the United States. Cancelled after its first season, the series, as a result of a fan campaign, was brought back for a second and final seven-part season. Jericho also stars Skeet Ulrich, Ashley Scott, Michael Gaston, Sprague Grayden, and is available to stream on Paramount+.
You can also see James as Doctor in the 2024 apocalyptic musical film The End, which also stars Tilda Swinton as Mother, George MacKay as Son, Moses Ingram as Girl, Michael Shannon as Father, Bronagh Gallagher as Friend, and Tim McInnerny as Butler. The movie is streaming on Hulu and is set two decades after the end of the world. The story follows the last living humans on Earth who live in a bunker where Son was born. He has never seen the outside world, and when an outsider makes her way into their home, the story takes a turn.
A new and exciting role for the actor is that of Frank Moses in season 4 of the Paramount+ crime thriller, Mayor of Kingstown. The series was created by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone universe, Tulsa King) and singer, actor, and producer Hugh Dillon, who also stars. The story follows the family of Mike McLusky, portrayed by Jeremy Renner, in the fictional town of Kingstown, Michigan, who act as peacekeepers between the street gangs, prisoners, guards, and cops.
