Most fans knew that The Walking Dead: Dead City would be renewed for a third season, but the official announcement is welcome news. Variety recently reported that the series will continue, with one significant change.
Eli Jorne, showrunner for seasons 1 and 2 and series creator, will step down from his role, and TWD veteran writer and co-executive producer, Seth Hoffman, will join the series as the showrunner for the third installment. Hoffman is no stranger to The Walking Dead universe as he has written several exceptional episodes, including "Too Far Gone," "Claimed," "JSS," and more.
The first season saw long-time enemies Maggie and Negan team up to rescue her son Hershel, and the second pitted them against one another as they were trapped on opposing sides of the battle for Manhattan. The second season ended with a monologue in which they agreed to focus on a future that will be vastly different from what others have tried.
The official synopsis for season 3 reads: “Maggie and Negan finally put aside their differences to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse, but when chaos in the city begins to arise, they are forced to question: have they learned from their old wounds or will their dark past spell doom for the entire city?”
Filming for the upcoming season is scheduled to begin in Boston in the fall of 2025, and the synopsis reveals that Maggie and Negan will attempt to rebuild a community in Manhattan. While this may seem a bit odd, as there are many other places more suitable, Maggie feels she must remain in Manhattan as she hopes to win back her son, who betrayed her to the Dama.
The dark pasts of the long-time enemies could come into play as they begin anew. While it seems, for the time being, they are ready to work together, will the past creep back in, causing added strain? Although Maggie spared Negan's life in season 2, she will never forget the brutality of her husband, Glenn's, death, which he caused. The former leader of the Saviors has much to cloud his future. He continues to battle his guilt over past actions, and he recently sent his wife, Annie, and son, Joshua, away. He did this to keep them safe, but was heartbroken to do so.
Returning cast members for season 3 will include Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan, who also serve as executive producers with Hoffman, TWD Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple, Brian Brockrath, and Colin Walsh. Logan Kim, Lisa Emery, and Gaius Charles are also expected to return in their roles as Hershel, the Dama, the Croat, Željko Ivanek, and Perlie Armstrong, respectively.
It will be exciting to see if Maggie and Negan can make their dream of a better place to live a reality in season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City.
