As Chicago P.D. gears up for its highly anticipated Season 13, showrunner Gwen Sigan is promising one thing: this won’t be business as usual for the Intelligence Unit.
In a recent interview, Sigan opened up about the creative vision behind the new season, explaining that the goal is to “make it fresh and different” — while staying true to the emotional, character-driven storytelling fans love.
“We never want to repeat ourselves,” she said. “The world is evolving, and our characters are too. Season 13 is about pushing them into new territory — morally, emotionally, and professionally.”
After a gut-wrenching Season 12 finale that featured a shocking death and a major shift in team dynamics, the stakes for Season 13 couldn’t be higher. Sigan teased that Voight will face some of his toughest internal battles yet, while younger team members like Dante and Torres will step into more prominent roles.
“We’re going to see people questioning what leadership means,” she hinted. “What loyalty looks like. What justice even is, in today’s world.”
Another key goal? Balancing the gritty, high-stakes crime cases with deeper character development. Sigan noted that Season 13 will explore more personal stories, “the kind that don’t always end with a badge and a gun.”
And yes — expect twists. “We’re playing with structure, surprise, and how far we can push the emotional arc of each character,” Sigan revealed.
As Chicago P.D. prepares to return this fall, one thing’s clear: the team is going back to basics — but with a bold, modern edge. And fans should be ready for anything.
