Maple Leafs Post 3-Word Message After Historic Auston Matthews News

The Toronto Maple Leafs closed out their four-game road trip Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Penguins. They've been playing excellent hockey lately, winning seven of their last eight games, with all but one coming away from Scotiabank Arena.

It was a back-and-forth affair, and Toronto ultimately came out with a 6-5 victory in overtime. Just a minute into the extra frame, William Nylander sealed the win with a perfect wrist shot to the top left corner.

On the play, Matthews recorded his second assist of the game, bringing his career total in points to 700. The nine-year veteran is the fastest Maple Leaf to ever reach that milestone, doing it in 607 games.

After the game, the Maple Leafs made a post reacting to it.

"Another Matty milestone ," they wrote.

Matthews is no stranger to milestones, and he reached another one with his second-period goal , moving into second place on the Maple Leafs’ all-time goals list. He now sits just 30 away from matching Mats Sundin for the franchise record (420).

The former No. 1 overall pick already holds several Toronto records already, including the single-season goal record (69), the fastest to reach 500 points (445 games), and the only player in team history to score 30 or more goals in each of his first four NHL seasons, to name a few.

Through 45 games this season, the 27-year-old has 22 goals and 29 assists, totaling 51 points.

Matthews and the Maple Leafs will be back on the ice at home on Monday night to face the San Jose Sharks. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
