Maple Leafs Prospect May Leave the Organization Due to a Lack of Opportunity Amid Hot Streak

Toronto Marlies forward Alex Steeves continues to dominate the AHL, proving he's ready for an NHL opportunity, whether it comes with the Maple Leafs or elsewhere.

Maple Leafs Prospect May Leave the Organization Due to a Lack of Opportunity Amid Hot Streak

As the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to navigate an injury-riddled season, the door has opened for Toronto Marlies players to showcase their skills and earn a call-up. Nikita Grebenkin, for example, was called up earlier today after it was confirmed that Connor Dewar will miss time due to injury.

Earlier this week, it was Jacob Quillan who earned himself an NHL look, yet, one player still waiting for another shot at the NHL is Alex Steeves, and he may be the most deserving.

Steeves has played four games for the Maple Leafs this season, recording no points, but he has been outstanding in the AHL. Through 29 games, he has amassed 35 points and added to his AHL goal scoring lead, scoring his 22nd and 23rd goals, in tonight's game against the San Jose Barracuda.

As per Alex Papetti on X:

'Alex Steeves just scored his AHL leading 22nd goal of the season.

He deserves another look at the NHL level IMO.'

As per Lance Hornby on X:

'Hildeby and Marlies up 3-2 in the third in San Jose vs. Barracuda. Another goal for Alex Steeves.'

Steeves put an exclamation point on that by setting up the Marlies' game winner on Saturday to cap off a 3-point outing in the overtime win.

It's becoming increasingly clear that Steeves has outgrown the AHL. Since being sent down by the Leafs, he has been on a tear, showcasing his readiness for the next level.

Earlier this season, Steeves acknowledged that if an NHL opportunity doesn't come soon, he may need to consider other organizations, as he believes he has more to offer than what the Leafs have allowed him.

Steeves signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Leafs in the offseason, but if his impressive AHL play continues without an NHL call-up, this may very well be his last contract with the Maple Leafs organization.
