Voit suffered a shoulder injury in his AHL debut that kept him out for the rest of the season.

Ty Voit's goal ahead of this season is to show what he couldn't last season due to a shoulder injury.

The forward made his AHL debut with the Toronto Marlies on Dec. 20, after coming off a previous shoulder injury sustained during last year's Traverse City Prospects Tournament.

It was a moment of excitement for Voit, who hadn't seen game continuous action since his final OHL appearance. However, it was quickly cut short after he fell awkwardly into the boards.

It was a moment of excitement for Voit, who hadn't seen game continuous action since his final OHL appearance. However, it was quickly cut short after he fell awkwardly into the boards.

"Yeah, it was a weird thing that happened and then I spent a good bit of time rehabbing, felt really good," Voit described his first injury before discussing his second one, "got some stint games down with the Growlers and then came back up and just, unfortunately, just got a weird hit and it pushed it right out so not much I can do about that one."

The 21-year-old revealed that he tore his labrum, which is the reason why he needed season-ending surgery in January.

"It wasn't fun. It was a long time but I was lucky up here (in Toronto) with a bunch of great trainers and stuff so they kept me honest," he said on Friday. "But I've had a lot of time in the summer to train and this is my first skate back with this intensity with this kind of guys because I've been out of the game for a bit. But, you know, it was a good process."

With the two shoulder injuries, Voit has only played six games within the last year. And although this is an opportunity for him to show Maple Leafs management what he's made of, the winger wants to feel comfortable at the same time.

"I think I took [the injury] pretty hard right off the start but I had a lot of great people in my ear up here and the months that goes by I'm almost more fired up to get back in it," Voit said. "Now that I'm moving I kind of just want to reestablish myself and just show what I can do."

The forward added that his Marlies teammates supported him throughout the rehab process.

"We had a bunch of great vets that I was with at the Marlies. Cliffy (Kyle Clifford) was a great one, (Joseph) Blandisi, (Logan) Shaw. Even the younger guys were great with me," Voit said. "You have those big vets that are in my ear like, 'Don't worry about it, shit happens.' It was just great to have those guys in my ear."

Voit enters this season with a lot to prove. The winger had 105 points (24 goals, 81 assists) in 67 games during his final season with the OHL's Sarnia Sting. This past season was an opportunity to show what he could do at the pro level.

Instead, the hope that he stays fully healthy and can take on a role with the Marlies, begins this season.

"I just kind of want to get back in the mix and kind of just show what I was supposed to show last year. I was sadly held out with a shoulder injury so I've had a while to go without some hockey here.

"So just kind of getting myself back in the mix, reestablishing my position here in the organization and also just connecting with all these new boys that are around."
