While the Toronto Maple Leafs are set in goal with both Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll, they wanted to supplement their goaltending situation for the AHL affiliate Toronto Marlies.

Longtime AHL goaltender Ken Appleby has been signed to a contract by the Marlies, along with forwards Reese Johnson and Marc Johnstone.

By joining the Maple Leafs organization, Appleby returns to his home province, having been born in North Bay, Ontario.

Appleby was never drafted into the NHL, and signed a 3-year entry level contract with the New Jersey Devils in 2015.

After 3 years in the Devils organization, which included 3 NHL games, he wasn't given a qualifying contract offer and signed a 1-year deal with the Winnipeg Jets.

Since then, he signed subsequent deals with the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, and later, the Charlotte Checkers.

In 24 games this year with the Checkers, Appleby went 15-8-1 and posted an impressive 1.96 GAA.

With the Marlies, he joins a crowded crease that includes Dennis Hildeby and Vyacheslav Peksa. A spot was opened up after now-former Maple Leafs/Marlies goaltender Matt Murray joined the Seattle Kraken in free agency.

Appleby has played a total of 144 minutes at the NHL level, and has a 2.08 GAA along with a .921 SV%.

During his professional playing career, Appleby has also played for the OHL's Oshawa Generals, the ECHL's Adirondack Thunder, Jacksonville Icemen, and Worcester Railers, and the Albany Devils.
