Just days after winning the Super Bowl as Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore has completed his first day the New Orleans Saints Head Coach.
Kellen Moore joins a New Orleans Saints team that finished the 2024 regular season with a 5-12 record. The Saints missed the playoffs for the fourth straight year.
New Orleans fired Dennis Allen after the Saints were beaten 23-22 by the Carolina Panthers. Stephen A. Smith said Allen should be unhappy with Derek Carr from his career perspective.
The loss marked the seventh-straight defeat for New Orleans after a promising 2-0 start. Darren Rizzi served as the interim Head Coach.
The Saints go from a defensive-minded Head Coach (Allen) to an offensive-minded Head Coach (Moore). In 2024, the team ranked 21st in average offensive yards and touchdowns across the NFL.
Marcus Spears says New Orleans Saints fans should be excited at the appointment of Kellen Moore
Speaking on NFL Live, Marcus Spears gave his reaction to the appointment and said fans should be thrilled, he said: “I think they should be [excited], it is symbolic of a restart.
“This team has some salary cap issues they have to deal with, the other thing, I think about the move they made when they went to Sean Peyton, the team was kind of waffling.
“The season before Peyton came, they were 3-13 and with Kellen, we have seen this progression in coaching style.
“I talked about it after the Super Bowl about being willing to commit to the run and understanding what this team was built for dynamic-wise. They should be excited, but obviously, there is a lot of work to do.”
Saints have a QB problem heading into the offseason
The biggest question for the Saints this offseason is what they do with quarterback Carr. Carr suffered an injury in week five against the Kansas City Chiefs and ended up missing seven games in 2024.
Carr threw for 2145 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions, but performance isn’t the issue.
The Saints have $48 million in dead cap space already, and if they decide to cut before 1 June it would be a $50 million cap hit. Carr could always be traded, but it’s a lot of money for a team to take on.
If he is no longer on the Saints, they could look to draft a quarterback in the second round. Although a weak QB draft class could maybe force New Orleans to eat the salary and stick with Carr for 2025.
