The Chicago P.D. Season 12 finale left fans breathless — and according to star Marina Squerciati, filming it wasn’t any easier.
In a recent interview, Squerciati — who plays Officer Kim Burgess — opened up about the emotional toll of the finale, which featured high-stakes tension, shocking decisions, and a moment fans had been waiting for: Burzek’s long-overdue wedding… or what was supposed to be one.
“It Was a Lot to Carry”
Squerciati admitted the finale was one of the most emotionally intense experiences she’s had on the show.
“There were scenes where I just had to sit afterward and breathe,” she said. “It felt like everything we’d built with Kim over the years came crashing into one moment.”
Between juggling her character’s ongoing trauma, the evolving relationship with Ruzek, and the final twist that left fans divided, Squerciati said the finale felt more like a season series closer than just a transition into Season 13.
On Burzek’s Wedding “Fakeout”
When asked about the much-hyped courthouse wedding reveal that felt like an afterthought to many viewers, Marina didn’t shy away.
“I’ll be honest — I wanted more for them too,” she confessed. “But sometimes P.D. doesn’t do things the traditional way. And maybe that’s okay.”
While fans were hoping for a full-on emotional payoff, complete with vows, dresses, and tears, the off-screen reveal left many heartbroken. Still, Marina emphasized the importance of subtlety:
“It wasn’t about the wedding — it was about survival. Love in chaos. That’s what Burzek is.”
