Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis is one of the most iconic figures in the sport but stops short of being a Jerry Jones-like figure in his franchise. Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal captured a quote from Davis when he spoke to the media at the NFL Owners Meeting about his role in the team's decision-making process.
“The evaluation process that (general manager) John (Spytek) and (head coach) Pete (Carroll) went through, they decided which way they were going to focus," said Davis. “For me, it’s giving them the ability to do what they want to do. I’ll grill and everything, play devil’s advocate the whole time, and just make sure."
Davis has failed to recreate the success that his father, the late Al Davis, had while coaching and running the Raiders organization. The benefit, however, of having an owner like Mark Davis is that his failure is not due to a lack of trying.
He has learned from his mistakes during his 15-year tenure at the helm of the franchise and is correcting those miscues this season. Bringing in an experienced duo like Spytek and Carroll to run your organization and letting those men do their jobs is an excellent choice by an owner who has no real experience playing or coaching the game of football.
Eventually, the dam will break and the Raiders will return to greatness. Raider Nation will have Mark Davis to thank for this, as his tireless pursuit to make this a winning organization will surely pay off.
