There are very few things in the world Mark Stone loves more than hockey. However, one of those things may be golf.
During Stone’s battles with back issues, one of the recurring themes in his interviews was that not only couldn’t he play hockey but he wasn’t able to get on the golf course either.
Stone is damn good too. Stone’s current handicap as registered by the USGA is 3.1 and he’s been as good as a 0.4, which officially means he’s a “scratch golfer.” In a recent interview on the Coming In Hot Podcast, co-host Jason York revealed Stone and his partner finished 2nd place in the Indian Wood member/guest tournament. Stone joked that he didn’t realize it was a four-day event so it was quite a grind but they prevailed to finish 2nd in a playoff.
It’s a different type of pressure. I didn’t think I’d be nervous about anything (athletically), but it just gets ya. –Mark Stone on Coming In Hot Podcast
Stone also shared an amazing story about meeting the greatest golfer of all time.
Last year, we unfortunately lost in the first round to Dallas, and a couple of us got an email asking if we’d play in Tiger Woods’ Tiger Jam tournament (at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas). He’s probably #1 or #2 of my favorite athletes of all time, so that was pretty cool. I didn’t really know what to expect and didn’t really know what the tournament was, so I showed up there and he was doing his little spiel on the range where he hits cool shots. So he and Colin Morikawa were doing a long drive contest, and right at the end of it he says, ‘I think we’ve got a guy here who might be able to hit it as far as me.’ Called me up there. God, I was sweating, he was sweating, it was 110 degrees outside. I shook his hand. He handed me his driver. I had no glove on. I was so worried the club was going to sling out of my hand. But I hit a good one so it was pretty cool and Karlsson videotaped it for me so I’ve got that. –Stone on Coming In Hot Podcast
Trust me, I’ve searched everywhere for that video, it does not currently exist on the Internet, but trust me, I will be trying to get Stone or Karlsson to let me see it when Training Camp gets underway in a few weeks.
