Mets urged to swing blockbuster trade with Cubs if Pete Alonso ditches NY
The New York Mets are expected to be in the mix for Juan Soto, but they have a free agent of their own teams will be looking to add. If Pete Alonso doesn't stay with the Mets, they could swing a trade for a different star.
FanSided's Joshua Ambroise urged the Mets to swing a blockbuster trade for Cody Bellinger of the Chicago Cubs if Alonso signs elsewhere in free agency.
"If Soto signs with the Mets, the team may move on from Alonso, which would leave them without a first baseman," wrote Ambroise. "However, the team could fix that issue by turning to the trade market. One suitor that could work out for the Mets in a potential trade is the Chicago Cubs. If they decided to target a player from the Cubs, first baseman Cody Bellinger would be the perfect choice. Rumors say that the team is looking to trading him and New York could be an ideal landing spot for him."
Bellinger signed a three-year, $80 million deal last spring to stay with the Cubs. However, the deal included player options after the first two seasons. Bellinger's contract could prevent the Cubs from spending big in free agency. Moving him could open up room to operate.
"At the very moment, the Mets could use a power bat at first base. The task of replacing Alonso won't be easy," wrote Kline. "However, acquiring a talented veteran like Bellinger could change the dynamic of the Mets lineup with his bat. Bellinger, 29, is coming off a solid season with the Cubs."
Bellinger hit .266 with 18 home runs and 78 RBIs in 2024.
