The Falcons will need some weapons in the secondary next season, and Michigan's cornerback Will Johnson may fit that mold in Atlanta.
Atlanta has several holes to fill on the defensive side of the football, including an edge rusher and a defensive lineman. But which position should the Falcons take with the 15th overall pick in this year's NFL Draft?
The consensus would be to go with an edge rusher, but the Falcons have been known to pull a fast one and do the opposite. At this point, it is all just speculation. If Will Johnson makes it to 15th, what will they be getting?
Johnson is 6'2" and weighs 202 pounds. He is rarely targeted downfield due to his length and ability to break up passes at a high tilt. He has great change of direction, and understands opponents route running and angles needed to defend.
Over three seasons, Johnson accumulated 68 tackles, 6 interceptions, and 17 pass breakups while starting 22 games. He has exceptional ball skills as well.
Johnson missed some time this season due to suffering a toe injury, but managed to accumulate good production. In turn, he decided to declare for the NFL Draft this past December.
For the Atlanta Falcons defense, A.J. Terrell and Will Johnson would compliment each other well at the cornerback position, given that Mike Hughes is more than likely to test the free agency market when the new league year begins.
Falcons Have Decisions To Make On Matthew Judon and Justin Simmons
The Atlanta Falcons must decide on some outstanding players that could hit the free agency market this offseason.
The NFL league year starts on March 12th, which means that over the next month, some tough decisions will be made behind closed doors. Names like Matthew Judon and Justin Simmons are at the top of the list of over 20 players scheduled to become free agents.
