Mike Francesa Accuses Devin Williams of Quitting on Yankees: ‘He Shouldn’t Be Here'

Until further notice, New York Yankees fans should not expect to see former All-Star closer Devin Williams regularly pitching in save situations.

That’s just fine for legendary New York radio sports host Mike Francesa, who has no problem watching Williams sit in the bullpen all night.

Francesa eviscerated Williams during an interview on WFAN on Thursday, accusing the veteran reliever of “giving up on the mound” amid another poor stretch. Williams has allowed an earned run in each of his last four outings, blowing two saves and watching his ERA skyrocket to 5.44.

Francesa added that Williams, who spent his first six seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, doesn’t like playing in New York.

“Forget Williams,” Francesa ranted. “Williams doesn’t want to be here. ... He won’t be here next year, he shouldn’t be here."

Francesa cited Williams’ body language in Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to the Texas Rangers, specifically how the veteran reliever reacted to left fielder Jasson Domínguez misplaying a ball.

“As soon as that ball was missed, you could see him sulking, and his shoulders dropped,” Francesa said. “You could see how he was on the mound. He didn’t fight through it at all.”

David Bednar, a two-time All-Star with the Pittsburgh Pirates, closed Wednesday’s 3-2 victory.

The 61-54 Yankees hold a 1 1/2 game lead over the Rangers and Cleveland Guardians for the AL’s third and final Wild Card spot. However, the Yankees are a season-worst 6 1/2 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East.

“It would be criminal if they don’t make the playoffs,” Francesa told Sal Licata.
