Minnesota Vikings continue giving out extensions with the latest going to underrated reason for success under Kevin O'Connell

The Minnesota Vikings have been one of the better organizations when it comes to rewarding those who make a major impact. When you take care of your own, it sets an important precedent that many in the National Football League take notice of.

After giving extensions to Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Kevin O'Connell , Aaron Jones, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Josh Oliver over the last few months, the Vikings have given out another one. According to The Star Tribune's Ben Goessling, the Vikings have agreed to an extension with offensive coordinator Wes Phillips, who was set to have his contract expire after the 2025 season.

Vikings sign OC Wes Phillips to contract extension

Phillips is a mostly unheralded coach for the Vikings. With O'Connell calling the plays, what he does for the team often goes unnoticed. He has the same role that O'Connell did with the Los Angeles Rams: game planning and play design.

It's a really important role for the Vikings, especially with O'Connell's responsibilities to run the team. The Vikings offense has been consistent over the first three years of O'Connell's tenure and Phillips is a big reason for that.

The next step will be to lock in defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who is set to have his contract expire after the 2025 season. If they are unable to, Flores would be free to interview with other organizations for defensive coordinator jobs.
