Mitch Marner Misses Maple Leafs Practice After He And Wife Welcome Baby Boy

Mitch Marner and his wife, Stephanie, have welcomed a baby boy.

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that Marner would miss Sunday's practice ahead of Game 1 against the Florida Panthers in the second round of the playoffs. He and his wife welcomed their child on Sunday morning.

"I mean, he's probably flying high right now. I remember I had my first child, and it's a different feeling for sure," Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said Sunday.

"It's one of the best feelings you'll ever have, in my opinion. I'm sure he's very excited and he'll be excited tomorrow, and he needs to get a little skate in in the morning, it'll be a lot of good positive things on his mind, which is good."

The 27-year-old was one of Toronto's top players in their first-round series against the Ottawa Senators. Marner had one goal and seven assists for eight points through six games against Ottawa, the second-most behind William Nylander.

"It's really special. Gives you tremendous perspective and meaning to life and see things really, really differently," John Tavares, who has three kids, said.

"Anyone becoming a parent, becoming a father, it's pretty remarkable. I think for him, obviously, he's been probably real emotional, and just to try to soak it all in. It's really, really special, so really happy for Mitchie and his wife and his family."

In February, Jake McCabe's wife, Gaby, revealed on her Instagram story that the Marners were having a baby, with a decorated cookie and a card, which read: "Oh boy! Welcome baby Marner."

Other Maple Leafs, Simon Benoit and Morgan Rielly, welcomed their first child earlier this season. Benoit and his girlfriend welcomed a baby girl during Toronto's training camp, while Rielly and his wife, Tessa Virtue, welcomed a baby boy in August.

"It’s exciting for sure. Super happy for him and Steph. Obviously, a big moment in his life," said Anthony Stolarz. "Hopefully he gets some rest here, enjoys the day with her and their families, and looking forward to getting him back tomorrow."

"We're all happy for him. It's very exciting for him, his family," added Auston Matthews.

Toronto's second-round series against the Florida Panthers begins Monday inside Scotiabank Arena, with puck drop scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
