Mitch Marner's Maple Leafs Contract Extension Receives Blunt GM Update
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving addressed the Mitch Marner contract situation for the second time since the franchise retained its player through the trade deadline.
Asked by TSN’s Gino Reda on Tuesday about the star winger’s future, Treliving made clear that he will provide an update if there's one to share in the future.
“We are going to focus on the ice," Treliving said. "Any updates that we have business-wise, we will be sure to share them if and when we can.”
Marner is in the final year of a six-year, $65.41 million contract and will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 barring the signing of an extension between the end of the playoffs and the opening of free agency.
Reports emerged after the trade deadline that Toronto had asked him to waive his no-trade clause for a potential deal with the Carolina Hurricanes involving Mikko Rantanen.
Marner declined, choosing to play out the remainder of his contract with the Leafs.
“As we all know, Mitch has had a terrific year and he’s a vital part of our team,” Treliving said. “He’s a big part of what we’re going to try to accomplish the next 14 games and moving on beyond that.
”That’s really where all of our focus is.”
Marner leads the Leafs with 82 points (21 goals, 61 assists) in 66 games and is on pace for his first 100-point season after falling just one point short of reaching that figure in the 2022-23 season.
With Toronto fighting for playoff positioning, Treliving emphasized that the team’s priority is peaking at the right time.
“I don’t care where you finish, you are playing a really good team in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs,” Treliving said. “Getting your game in order and making sure you are playing the very best you can when it matters the most, that’s the most important thing for us.”
The Maple Leafs are tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning at 83 points in the standings, trailing only the Florida Panthers (85) in the Atlantic Division, although both have one game in hand on the division leaders.
