MLB Insider Identifies Mitch Keller as Top Target in Red Sox Jarren Duran Trade Talks

The Boston Red Sox have many options to choose from if they want to trade outfielder Jarren Duran for a starting pitcher. Boston also has the luxury of being able to wait for the best offer rather than rushing to trade Duran before the deadline.

They reportedly have already turned down the San Diego Padres’ trade package of pitcher Dylan Cease and number-two prospect Ethan Salas in exchange for the former All-Star.

One week from the trade deadline, Boston must decide if the organization wants to trade Duran and which available pitcher best suits their roster and organizational timeline.

MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand joined MLB Network on Friday to discuss the league’s interest in Duran and Boston’s ideal trade partner.

“His market is there for sure. The thing that the Red Sox are looking for more than anything else is a controllable starting pitcher to pair with [Garrett] Crochet at the top of that rotation.” Feinsand continued, “To me, a Jarren Duran-Mitch Keller trade makes a lot of sense for both sides.… But I think if they can find a controllable starter, they would make a move. The question is who’s that guy, and is it worth doing…”

The Red Sox and Pirates are perfect trade partners. Boston desperately needs a starting pitcher that can aid, not only this year’s postseason push, but future ones as well. The Pirates, who are always looking to shed financial commitments, would rid themselves of the remaining money on Keller’s five-year, $77 million contract.

While a Duran for Keller swap may not be what gets a deal done, each player fits each team’s respective timelines. Boston would get a number-two starter behind Crochet, who is known for his consistency (Keller is on pace for his fourth consecutive season with an ERA below 4.30 and over 150 innings pitched). Meanwhile, Duran would slide into Pittsburgh’s outfield alongside O’neil Cruz, if he is not dealt at the deadline, and give the Pirates two dynamic and under-30 stars.
