Team Canada lost in a shock upset to Finland at the 2025 IIHF World Championship, and after the game, Nathan MacKinnon snapped at a reporter over the officiating.
While Team Canada finished the 2025 IIHF World Championship with a 6-1 record heading into the medal stage of the tournament, their once defeat came as a major upset at the hands of Finland.
Canada may not have played to their best in the tournament, but it's safe to say the officials didn't help much either, and when asked about the officials after the game, Nathan MacKinnon had a simple, discouraging one word answer: terrible.
Then, he followed it up by answering just how they were terrible, snapping at a reporter at the same time as he questioned almost all the calls that the IIHF officials made in the game.

How could they have been good? What do you think?
Horrible whistles. Both ways. We had the puck the whole game, but we only got one power play. So I don't understand. You must be from Finland or something.

That final shot came after the reporter seemingly tried to defend the performance of the officials, something which MacKinnon certainly wasn't having, and while he's been known to be frustrating and demanding, MacKinnon took it to another level here by taking a shot at the reporter.
Even with the poor whistle, Canada only lost in overtime against Finland, and managed to progress through the group stages anyway, so while they may have been terrible and they may have something to say to MacKinnon after his outburst, Canada is still moving on as they look to capture a gold medal ahead of the 2026 Olympic Games where they will try to do the same.
