NeNe Leakes’ stint on Real Housewives of Atlanta made her an icon. As viewers, we saw her relationship with her husband, Gregg Leakes, and her two sons, Brentt Leakes and Bryson Leakes. Sadly, Gregg passed away in 2021 after a long battle with colon cancer. Gregg was a beloved figure on RHOA and the model of a supportive husband. Unfortunately, Brentt has recently had some serious struggles of his own with his health.
In October 2022, NeNe announced that Brentt had congestive heart failure and suffered a stroke. He was just 23 years old, and doctors were unsure about what caused his medical issues. NeNe added that Brentt was having trouble speaking, and asked her fans to pray for her son. Then NeNe said that they were both “shocked, just shocked.”
Brentt Leakes is recovering after having a heart transplant
Now Brentt has shared an update on his health via Instagram. In the caption, Brentt wrote, “To begin with, let me say, ‘Thank you, God.’ This year was undoubtedly the craziest for me. After several trips to the hospital and many doctors appointments, I finally heard the unexpected news that I was diagnosed with ‘congestive Heart Failure’ On June 19 (Ish).”
He continued, “In July of this year, I went into a 14-hour heart transplant surgery and now have a brand new heart in me. Now that I’m back (still in recovery) I’ve essentially had to relearn how to walk and communicate, but I’m even more fluent.” Brentt added, “This experience has FOREVER changed my life. I am so thankful to the family that donated the heart!” That is wonderful news that Brentt is doing well.
NeNe Leakes reacts to Brentt’s surgery
Of course, Brentt showed some love to NeNe and others who have been by his side through this journey. “A huge thank you to MY MOM, marshella , Nyoni, Big Janae , Nikiyah, my friends, doctors, nurses, and everyone else who was pushing, pulling, and praying me thru this. Never give up,” he added in his post.
The carousel’s first slide shows Brentt walking with a walker. “I’m walking, y’all. I can’t believe I’m back walking, y’all,” Brentt said in the video. “Been a couple days since I walked. Thank God.”
The next slide showed Brentt, seemingly shortly after his surgery, struggling to take some steps with the aid of medical personnel. The final two slides show Brentt lying in bed after his surgery.
Naturally, the former peach wrote a message to her son in the comments. “To God Be The Glory! It has been A LOT! I am so proud of how strong you’ve been thru this process son,” she posted, along with hearts and praying hands emojis. It is obvious that NeNe, Brentt, and Gregg were a tight family unit.
“Love ya, nephew, I always tell you.. your covered by the … ,” Marlo Hampton wrote, adding praying hands and blood drop emojis. Of course, some RHOA fans are hoping for NeNe’s Bravo return. Now that Brentt is recovering, maybe NeNe will give reality TV a try again.
