The Indianapolis Colts' Grover Stewart has steadily been one of the better interior run defenders across the NFL, and Neville Gallimore recently highlighted one aspect of Stewart's game that makes him so difficult to go up against.
"I can say I'm labeled as a strong guy, but then you just got guys that are at a different level," Gallimore said. "And it's funny just coming here, Grover is definitely one of those guys, like that dude just throws up weight. He's doing the alternate incline bench 170s, and I'm over here 160s, like yelling, huffing and puffing, and he's like, 'let me get that.'"
When an interior defender has the strength advantage, they are difficult to move and can generate quick push, which is the best way to wreck any offensive play.
Out of 153 eligible defensive tackles last season, Stewart ranked seventh in PFF's run defense grade. He also tallied the seventh-most tackles against the run, along with ranking sixth in stops.
And of all the tackles Stewart made, the average play came just 1.3 yards from the line of scrimmage, which was the third-best mark among his position group.
