New ‘9-1-1’ Season 9 BTS Images Could Hint at a Major Plotline

Could 9-1-1 Season 9 be the one where Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman) resolves some of his lingering issues, especially regarding his late wife Shannon (Devin Kelley)? New behind-the-scenes images of 9-1-1 Season 9 hint at a significant development in Eddie's life. Guzman was recently captured filming what is believed to be a Dia de Los Muertos-themed episode of 9-1-1, which could be part of his process in dealing with the loss that led him to do some bizarre things in 9-1-1 Season 7. It was also reported that Eddie's closest family members, namely his abuela Isabel (Ana Mercedes) and Aunt Pepa (Terri Hoyos), were also filming the episode. This could be a great opportunity for him to chart a path forward. Suppose Eddie doesn't make much progress with this storyline. In that case, the show will at least incorporate some of the cultural practices found in many Latino communities, making the character feel even more authentic.

Guzman has long wanted Eddie to move past Shannon in a healthy way. Eddie has been obsessed with his late wife, and retrospective framing has had him worshiping her to the point of seeking out her doppelgänger. When Guzman spoke to Collider's Therese Lacson while Season 7 was airing, he hoped Eddie would be kinder to himself. Below is what he said:

"I would love to have Eddie explore more of what he just started in this deconstruction of what love is and find a little bit more self-love for himself, to understand that I got to move past what I thought Shannon and I were going to be, and I got to fall in love with who I am right now, and soon as I do that, then the partner that's meant for me will find themselves and find me at the same time."

What Do We Know About '9-1-1' Season 9?

Details about the upcoming season remain scarce, as production commenced just a few weeks ago. However, we anticipate the continued exploration of the problem brought on by Bobby's (Peter Krause) demise, which shook everyone in the show and the real world. The firehouse will be looking for a new captain as they adjust to the new leadership, which differs from what they were accustomed to under Bobby. The characters will also deal with personal arcs ranging from relationship drama to work trauma and family pressures. Viewers will have to tune in to ABC this fall to watch the season.

9-1-1 returns on Thursday, October 9, at 8 p.m. ET. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
