New Orleans Saints Hire Brandon Staley As Defensive Coordinator

New Orleans Saints Head Coach Kellen Moore turned to a familiar face to be his defensive coordinator. He hired former Los Angeles Chargers Head Coach Brandon Staley to lead the New Orleans defense. Staley and Moore have a history with one another. Moore was hired to be Staley’s OC when Staley was the Chargers head coach in 2023.

New Orleans Saints Hire Brandon Staley As Defensive Coordinator

Neither guy had a successful 2023 season. Staley was fired following a 5-9 start, and Moore had a poor one-year stint as the team’s Offensive Coordinator. Staley served as San Francisco 49ers assistant coach this season while Moore won Super Bowl LIX as the Philadelphia Eagles OC. Will both coaches be able to have success in 2025 with the New Orleans Saints?

New Orleans Saints Offseason Summary

Moore takes over a New Orleans Saints team in a terrible salary cap situation. They are $51 million over next year’s cap. That will force the first-year head coach to make some tough decisions during his first offseason in charge. Fan favorite Defensive End Cameron Jordan may not be on the team next season as the team has to fix its salary cap issues.

Staley will have his work cut out fixing a Saints defense that was one of the league’s worst during the 2024-25 regular season. They were 30th in yards allowed, 19th in points allowed, and the second-worst team in the league at defending the run.

Final Thoughts

Even though Staley had an ill-fated tenure as Los Angeles Chargers head coach, that experience will be invaluable for Moore as he dives into the deep end of the pool. Since Moore will be a head coach for the first time, he will lean on Staley’s experience from his time with the Chargers.
