With the hype rising, all eyes were on the Saints taking either Shedeur Sanders or Jaxson Dart. Many fans thought one of the two high-profile prospects would find their way to the team.

Despite all of the hype, New Orleans did not draft a quarterback in the first round. Instead, the front office decided to wait until the second round.

In the second round, the team brought in Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough with the No. 40 overall pick. He now projects to be the team’s long-term franchise quarterback if he can develop and reach his ceiling.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, the Saints have some questions regarding veteran quarterback Derek Carr. It has been reported that he could miss the entire year due to a shoulder injury.

Should that be the case, New Orleans would turn to either Spencer Rattler or Shough as its starter.

A new report from The Athletic has given a major update about how Shough is viewed by the team. That report has stated that Shough could take over as the starter to begin the 2025 season.

During his final college season at Louisville, Shough completed 62.7 percent of his pass attempts for 3,195. yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions. His numbers may not pop off the charts, but his arm talent did.

Throughout the pre-draft process, Shough’s stock simply continued to grow. Now, he’s viewed as a potential franchise quarterback and the Saints are hoping that he can rise to that level. If he can, he could be one of the draft’s biggest second-round steals.
