New Orleans Saints still need to finish an important task that involves rookie QB Tyler Shough as soon as possible

The New Orleans Saints have had a busy offseason. They have a new head coach in Kellen Moore. Veteran quarterback Derek Carr retired. Justin Reid joined the secondary as a proven talent.

The quarterback competition rages on as they look for their Carr replacement, too. Rookie QB Tyler Shough is in the mix to win the job after getting selected with the 40th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. New Orleans still needs to get something done with the young passer, though.

Rookie QB Tyler Shough remains unsigned

Quarterback Tyler Shough remains the only rookie for the Saints that hasn't inked his rookie contract with the team yet. That should not be a surprise, though. Spotract notes that most of the 2025 second-round picks have not been signed as of yet.

Those second-rounders are annually the toughest deals to get done around the league. Agents and players want to find the best deal for themselves, and the teams tend to wait around when it comes to budging on the contracts details.

For Shough, this contract situation hasn't affected him one bit. He's been practicing at every turn for New Orleans, and the team has had positive things to say about him and his work ethic so far. Everyone involved seem confident that this will all work out in the long run.

We will see if Shough can win the QB competition to start for New Orleans to begin the season.

For other rookies, their contract situations have put a cloud of doubt over them as they enter the pros. That's not the case for the rookie QB for the Saints.

That's a norm across the board in the NFL, as the young players and their agents want to find the best deal for them. At the same time, they want to get a contract done that the team appreciates and believes makes sense as well.
