New 'The Walking Dead: Dead City' Season 2 Images Hint at Why It Received Mixed Reviews

Jeffrey Dean Morgan in The Walking Dead Dead City Season 2

This Sunday, the dead will rise again, with the Season 2 return of The Walking Dead: Dead City. Despite being part of the title, it isn’t the undead that will be the center of the drama on the offshoot of The Walking Dead. Instead, that honor goes to Lauren Cohan’s Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan, with the pair of enemies-turned-friends standing in the spotlight all over again for the highly anticipated sophomore installment. In a fresh set of images released to tease the debut episode, audiences are invited to catch a glimpse of Maggie, Negan, and some of the other faces — both familiar and new — who will bring the story back to life on May 4.

While it’s certainly exciting to get a sneak peek of the action ahead of the show’s return, the images also indicate what we’ve long been fearing about the sophomore season — the separation of Negan and Maggie. At the tail end of Season 1, we watched as the pair parted ways after Negan was traded for Maggie’s son, Hershel (Logan Kim). While the next set of episodes will see Maggie attempting to reconnect with her ex-partner, first reports indicate that a solid chunk of the story will keep them apart. This is going to be a big problem for many fans, especially those who find themselves shipping the most unlikely (but hopeful) couple to come from the universe of The Walking Dead.

As can be seen in the images, Maggie, Negan, and Hershel aren’t the only folks who will see their stories continue in the second chapter. We can expect to see more from Gaius Charles’ lawman, Perlie Armstrong, Željko Ivanek’s The Croat, and Lisa Emery’s The Dama, with the latter two continuing their villainous ways alongside newcomer Bruegel (Kim Coates).

In addition to the second season of The Walking Dead: Dead City, another popular spin-off will soon return for another batch of episodes, with the folks behind The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon hard at work on a third season. There’s also a possibility that — despite being billed as a miniseries — The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live could carry on with Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira reprising their roles as Rick and Michonne Grimes, respectively.
