The New York Rangers GM Chris Drury has been shaking things up recently, and now it looks like he will part with another franchise cornerstone this summer.
Yesterday, the New York Rangers made headlines as they were reportedly closing in on a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, parting ways with veteran and career Ranger Chris Kreider. This comes after the Rangers forced Jacob Trouba into a trade to Anaheim and placed Barclay Goodrow on waivers after he refused to waive his no-trade clause to San Jose.
Now, it looks like more changes are coming to New York as GM Chris Drury is ready to part ways with former 40-goal scorer Mika Zibanejad after an underwhelming 62-point campaign.
'Rangers have also been engaged in trade talks with clubs regarding defenceman K'Andre Miller and centre Mika Zibanejad, who has a full no-movement clause.'
On top of shopping Zibanejad, the Rangers are also looking to move on from restricted free agent defenseman K'Andre Miller, who is in for a raise.
While Zibanejad has a full no-movement clause, that has not stopped the Rangers in the past, as they moved on from Trouba and Goodrow, and will shortly move on from Kreider. Zibanejad will have some semblance of choosing where he wants to go, but if the Rangers get a great offer from a team that Zibanejad does not want to play for, they will pull out every trick in the bag to get him to waive his clause.
Zibanejad, 32 years old, has played in 930 career NHL games split between the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators, who drafted him 6th overall in 2011. His best year was in the COVID-shortened season in 2019-20, where he scored 41 goals and 75 points in only 57 games. If he can find this form with his new team and bounce back from his 62-point campaign, then the Rangers will certainly regret moving on from the Swedish centerman.
