NFL Analyst Has Bold Prediction on Saints Quarterbacks

The New Orleans Saints quarterbacks are some of the least experienced in football, with rookie Tyler Shough battling second-year pro Spencer Rattler and third-year veteran Jake Haener for the starting job. While most believe Shough will ultimately win the Week 1 job,  Bleacher Report‘s Moe Moton isn’t so sure. In a recent article, the NFL analyst made his case for why he believes Spencer Rattler will win the starting job.

“Even though [Tyler] Shough spent six years in college, he may need time to grasp the speed of the pro game,” Moton writes. “Rattler was the primary backup over Haener last season. He’ll stay ahead of him on the depth chart and beat out Shough for a second chance to showcase his talent in a starting role.”

Bleacher Report: Spencer Rattler, Not Tyler Shough, Will Win Saints Starting Quarterback Job

Spencer Rattler saw some action last year in relief of an injured Derek Carr. Starting six games without recording a win, the fifth-round rookie finished his inaugural season completing 57% of his passes for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. While he didn’t set the world on fire, he had a few promising moments and could be the short-term starter if Shough isn’t ready to start.

With that being said, however, this battle of the Saints quarterbacks is still Shough’s to lose. First-year head coach Kellen Moore clearly believes he’s a talented player, as he used a second-round pick on the rookie despite already having Rattler on the roster. Seeing as New Orleans is finally embracing a long-overdue rebuild, this team should spend the 2025 season determining whether or not Shough can be a franchise quarterback.

Jake Haener, meanwhile, is a clear afterthought as the third quarterback. Making one start last year, the former fourth-round pick has completed just 46.2% of his passes for 226 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
