Justin Fields landed a lucrative two-year, $40 million contract with the New York Jets this offseason. It was a move that clearly showed the team's commitment to Fields.
While the money looks the part of Fields being the clear-cut starter, he will have to earn it. There is no question about the potential that he possesses, but Fields has been unable to show consistency throughout his young NFL career.
During the 2024 NFL season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Fields did show improvement. He completed 65.8% of his pass attempts for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and just one interceptions, while also picking up 289 yards and five more scores on the ground.
At just 26 years old, the ideal scenario for the Jets would be for Fields to break out and become their long-term franchise quarterback.
One NFL insider doesn't necessarily see things going that way and offered a grim outlook for Fields in New York.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk spoke out about the situation. He thinks there's a chance that Fields won't even be the starter for the entire 2025 season.
“That two-year, $40 million contract Justin Fields signed — once upon a time, that’s top of the market. Nowadays, that says ‘placeholder.’ And it’s entirely possible it’s Tyrod Taylor who ends up being the quarterback of the Jets at some point this year," he said.
Darren Mougey, the Jets' general manager, has already confirmed Fields to be the team's starter to begin the 2025 season.
"We believe Justin is the starter," he said. "We believe in Justin. We believe we can win with Justin, so we're excited about Justin."
