The New Orleans Saints have been busier than expected on the free agency market this offseason. A couple of veterans could still be on their radar as training camp and the preseason unfolds for the black and gold.
Ian Rapoport gives update on Asante Samuel Jr. and Noah Fant
The Saints have kept an eye on multiple veteran free agents. NFL insider Ian Rapoport updated the fans around New Orleans' fan base regarding their team's pursuit of cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. and tight end Noah Fant.
Saints tight end Juwan Johnson is intrigued by New Orleans adding Fant. That may surprise some folks, but Johnson is comfortable with his role in the offense and feels like Fant could provide notable depth for the team's offense. That is understandable.
“He can add so much,” Johnson told reporters after Friday's training camp practice. “One, he can add a lot of explosiveness to the offense and I’d be extremely excited to have him here. I mean, you've had guys like Ben Watson, Jimmy Graham here before. You've had guys like that before that's really been explosive. And so you can just think of things like that. I'm not going to go the whole, like, Gronk and Aaron Hernandez thing. ... But that's the kind of potential something like that can have.” -- Saintswire
Adding Fant could make plenty of sense for the Saints. Foster Moreau is rehabbing from his injury last season, and a timetable for his return is still unclear. Taysom Hill's role, if he plays this season, will be different from that of a normal TE. The veteran addition could provide a higher baseline of play at the position.
As for Samuel Jr., he is a player I think New Orleans should sign as soon as the medical green light turns on. He has experience with Brandon Staley, and the Saints defense needs more experience in their secondary. They currently are set to start second-year CB Kool-Aid McKinstry at outside cornerback, along with either Isaac Yiadom or rookie Quincy Riley.
