NHL Announces Slight Auston Matthews Change Before Game 5

The Toronto Maple Leafs are just one win away from reaching the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for only the third time since the 2003–04 season.

NHL Announces Slight Auston Matthews Change Before Game 5

While Auston Matthews hasn’t matched the jaw-dropping numbers he put up last year, when he scored 69 goals and racked up 107 points, he’s still been one of the top players in the league, helping the Leafs capture their first-ever Atlantic Division title.

In 67 regular-season games, Matthews notched 33 goals and 45 assists, finishing with 78 points. Through the first four games of the playoffs, he added a goal and five assists.

Interestingly enough, that fifth assist was added to his total on Monday, a day when the Leafs weren't even scheduled to play.

The NHL announced an official scoring change on Toronto forward Matthew Knies' second-period goal in Game 4.

"Toronto's goal at 10:12 of the second period now reads Matthew Knies from Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews," NHL Public Relations wrote.

Originally, Marner was credited as the only player with an assist on the play. But after review, Matthews was awarded the secondary assist for blocking a shot by Ottawa Senators defenseman Artem Zub, which led to Marner gaining possession of the puck.

Marner then flipped the puck forward to Knies, who outskated Zub for the breakaway goal to tie the game at two apiece.

The Leafs went on to lose that game 4-3 in overtime. They'll try to close out the series back in Toronto on Tuesday, with puck-drop scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
