Nicole Scherzinger Recalls Prince Hiding in the Bushes: ‘Psst!’

Nicole Scherzinger has had a pretty extraordinary year, by her own standards. But the “Dancing With the Stars” alum’s appearance on the “Hot Ones” podcast with Sean Evans was still something she was very excited about.

“This is a dream of mine come true,” she told Evans about appearing on his show. “Going to the Met [Ball], winning the Tony, and now being on ‘Hot Ones.'” The versatile singer and actress chatted about her new show, “Making the Band,” and what she has in common with her Broadway character. Along the way, she also spilled an anecdote that had legendary singer, Prince, hiding in the bushes.

The Iconic Singer Was in Heels at Noon, ‘Just Princing it Up’

While recovering from an especially hot bite, Scherzinger began talking about Prince, commenting that the singer “would have loved this right now.”

“Prince was my mentor, my friend, and my brother,” she said, before sharing a story with Evans about the iconic artist. “So, he’s got a show in Vegas, and I’m bringing my girlfriends, okay?” she began. “And we’re super excited to see the show and to see him perform and support him. And we’re out by this pool at this hotel, okay. Me and my girlfriends were like, ‘This is awesome. The sun is shining, we get to see Prince tonight in concert. It’s going to be magical.'”

“And me and my friends are talking, and then we hear a ‘psst, psst,'” Scherzinger continued. “And we see this bush kind of moving, and we hear, ‘psst, psst,’ and I’ll be damned, Prince was hiding behind the bush trying to get my attention. I don’t know why.”

Evans suggests it was because he couldn’t just walk out: he was Prince.

“He was just hiding behind the bush, full shoulder pads like this. It was like, noon, fully dressed, looking amazing, just Princing it up, heels and all,” she added.

Prince Told Nicole Scherzinger She Belonged on the Stage

Scherzinger, who won her first Best Actress Tony Award for her captivating performance as Norma Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard,” also gives credit to Prince for encouraging her to perform in more musicals.

“I wouldn’t be here, Sean, without him,” she said. “because he actually came to see me in “Cats” and he was like, ‘You are an analog singer, not a digital singer. Your voice is too big and you need to do music that’s big enough for your voice. And this is your stage, Nicole.”

“So, here we are,” she added.

Scherzinger has spoken before about her close bond with the singer. When Prince died in 2016 after a fentanyl overdose, the former Pussycat Dolls singer was one of many who mourned him. Calling him “the most phenomenal [or as we would’ve spelled it, fun-awe-man-all] human I’ve ever been blessed to know.”
