Should General Hospital recast Spencer?
It has been roughly a year and a half since General Hospital‘s Spencer fell into the Seine River never to be seen or heard from again (so far). Trina was forced to move on, and she finally has. She’s back at school, she’s working at the gallery, and she’s worrying about her parents and their drama. And she’s seeing a boy named Kai Taylor, a (former) college football star. The two are facing obstacles like her grief and his major injury. And now there’s an impending Drew issue. But while Trina’s bestie Joss is off battling rogue professors as a sudden WSB agent, Trina and Kai’s battles are rather…tame. It’s time to spice things up.
Spencer for ReHire
Trina (Tabyana Ali) and Kai (Jens Austin Astrup) need to be truly tested. And not in a small way. Their relationship has progressed, and they have established a connection. But it’s time for a make-or-break story arc to come their way.
And the only way to do that is to recast Spencer Cassadine (formerly Nicholas Alexander Chavez). We all know the character didn’t really die in the depths of the Seine River. He’s off recuperating from his vast injuries. Or he’s living a new life after struggling to regain the memories of his lost soulmate. Or someone nefarious is holding him captive. At this point, we’ll believe almost anything that explains why he hasn’t returned to Port Charles yet.
The Michael Corinthos Template
Hopefully, the show can come up with an original and epic storyline that sees Spencer returning to Port Charles. The character of Michael (Rory Gibson) recently returned to PC, and he landed on terra firma with authority and with a darker, more intense vibe. Immediately, he protected his kids, came to a sobering realization about his wife and their failed marriage. And he breathed life into a potential Michael and Sasha (Sofia Mattsson) romance. The chemistry between Rory Gibson and Sofia Mattsson is off the charts.

Time for a Test
And so we would love for something like that to happen here. Bring Spencer back to town. Make him a version that will keep Trina guessing and longing. And his return forces Trina to rethink everything about her current life. It shouldn’t be a one-sided situation. It should be complex and viable, and people could potentially root for each person in the equilateral triangle.
Trina and Kai are a nice, warm, and comfortable couple. But they’re still young and they haven’t been put through the wringer yet (not much anyway). And who knows if they’re even destined for greater things? But it would be helpful to find out, so they need to be tested in ways they have never been tested before. It would give us an even better sense if they are a couple made for the long run.
If Trina and Kai are not, maybe the new version of Spencer and Trina would be, even with a recast. Whomever GH would recast has to be extra special, however, because Spencer Cassadine is an extra special character, and Sprina is an extra special couple.
