The Buffalo Bills have not been anywhere near the Super Bowl since 1994. It does not help their case that the team is 0-4 on the biggest stage in football. Considering this, it also comes as no surprise that the Bills would be used as an example to prove that experience gained from losing repeatedly does not translate to winning.
Interestingly enough, the Bills’ disappointing record was brought up during the Stanley Cup Finals between the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers. Head coach for the Oilers Kris Knoblauch was giving a press conference when he was asked about his team’s lack of experience in playing the finals while going up against a Panthers team that is headed into its second straight finals.
His response, well, was enough to make the Buffalo Bills fan base root against his team for the rest of the finals.
Yea, experience is good. I don't know how much experience is beneficial, you can ask the Buffalo Bills how important Super Bowl experience is but the biggest thing is having confidence to play and when our guys are playing their best, they should have a lot of confidence. Kris Knoblauch said
Talk about strays, the Bills caught one from the NHL. Practically, the head coach was making a good point, as experience, although beneficial, does not guarantee success.
The Buffalo Bills are one of 12 NFL teams yet to taste a Super Bowl victory
The Bills have been to the Super Bowl on four separate occasions. The team lost the big game to the New York Giants in 1991, then made it back there in 1992 just to lose to the Washington Redskins. The Bills made it back to the Super Bowl in 1993 and 1994 as well, impressive right? The team managed to make it to the 4-straight finals. However, they ended up losing both those years to the Dallas Cowboys.
It comes as no surprise that the city of Buffalo has the worst luck when it comes to the Super Bowl. Since that year, the team has not made it back there and to this day; they hold the record for making it to four consecutive Super Bowls and have lost them all.
The Oilers should be prepared to witness a surge of Bills fans at their games that show up just to boo the team in the finals. Considering that the likes of Sam Reinhart, Kyle Okposo, and Brandon Montour, all of whom are former members of the Sabres are now on the Panthers, hockey fans in Buffalo would naturally be inclined to root for them over the Oilers.
