One of the most intense training camp battles going on with the Philadelphia Eagles is at the CB2 position between Adoree' Jackson and Kelee Ringo. It was Ringo who had a chance to make a great impression, but couldn't capitalize on one play.
During Tuesday's practice, quarterback Jalen Hurts was throwing a short pass to Jahan Dotson, but Ringo was on top of it and was ready to make an interception that would have been returned for a touchdown. Unfortunately for Ringo, he dropped the pick as he bobbled the ball.
This play was discussed by several Eagles reporters, including ESPN's Tim McManus, who chronicled the play from his perspective.
"Ringo nearly came up with a highlight-reel interception off Jalen Hurts as he covered Jahan Dotson along the sideline, but couldn't secure it after a couple bobbles."
Bleeding Green Nation's Brandon Lee Gowton also saw the play and gave his thoughts on Ringo's dropped interception.
"Ringo dropped an interception. Kudos to him for making the right read and jumping the route … but he’s simply gotta catch the ball there. Missed opportunity."
Did Ringo just ruin his shot at jumping out ahead of Jackson for the starting CB2 job?
Every play is critical in training camp, especially when players are competing for starting jobs. It may not be the end of the world for Ringo, but it certainly was a missed opportunity.
Jackson and Ringo have been going back and forth each day on who would be working with the starters and who would be on the second team. It was Jackson who earned the starting job on Tuesday, working out with the first team.
Ringo has had a mixed bag of performances throughout training camp, having primarily served as a backup over the last two years for the Eagles. He has racked up 36 tackles, three pass deflections, one interception, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries in 34 career games.
The time is now for Ringo to step up and take the job from Jackson, but it might have to start with Thursday's preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. This cornerback battle won't be decided until the final day of camp.
