Even after releasing All-Pro Jaire Alexander, Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is excited about the young cornerbacks currently on the roster, their upside, and what the position group has to offer in 2025.
One day after releasing Alexander, Gutekunst held camp with reporters, expressing his optimism about the cornerbacks looking to fill the void left behind by Alexander’s departure.
“I feel really good,” Gutekunst said Tuesday at minicamp, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “The three guys have combined about 95 starts under their belt, I feel really good about that. We have some young guys that I’m really interested to see compete for those final roster spots. I’m excited about where that group is. The three guys have proven their ability in this league. I like their makeup, their toughness, their ability to play, their versatility. I’m excited about that group.”
Alexander had been locked in a contract impasse with the Packers prior to being released, which freed up $11.7 million against the cap since Green Bay made the move after June 1. His release clears the path for the likes of Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine, and Nate Hobbs playing expanded roles in the secondary.
Likewise, the Packers could aim to pull off a blockbuster trade for a young cornerback in need of a change of scenery to boost the talent level at a position that plays an outsized role in coordinator Jeff Hafley’s scheme.
However, given Hobbs’ arrival via free agency and Gutekunst’s confidence in Valentine and Nixon, Green Bay may look to replace Alexander from within, even if it means a position change for a receiver such as Bo Melton, who’s taking reps at the position this week.
Regardless, Gutekunst and the Packers do not appear to have any regrets about moving on from Alexander.
