Packers’ Matt LaFleur sends ‘urgent’ warning after ugly preseason loss to Jets

Following a disappointing 30–10 loss to the New York Jets in their preseason opener, Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur issued a strong and urgent message to his team, making it clear that the performance was unacceptable and must improve moving forward.

"What we saw today is not the standard we expect from this team, and it’s not the way we play football here," LaFleur said, visibly frustrated after the game. "I’m not here to sugarcoat things—this loss was ugly, and we’ve got a lot of work to do. If we don’t make serious adjustments, we’re going to be in trouble when the regular season starts."

LaFleur didn’t hold back in his assessment, acknowledging that both the offense and defense failed to execute, and the team lacked the discipline necessary to compete at a high level. The Packers struggled with missed tackles, poor offensive line play, and ineffective quarterback decision-making, all of which contributed to the lopsided defeat.

"I’ve seen teams come out of the gate with much more fire than we showed today," LaFleur continued. "I expect every player to be accountable and come back to practice with a chip on their shoulder. This is not a time to back down or make excuses. We need to learn from this and improve—quickly."

While LaFleur remains committed to developing his team, this loss has raised questions about how prepared the Packers are heading into the regular season. With high expectations from fans and the organization, LaFleur’s warning is a clear signal that there is little room for complacency.

The coach also emphasized the need for leadership to step up in the coming weeks, with veteran players expected to take charge and set an example for the younger guys. "We need leaders who will not only hold themselves accountable but also push the rest of the team to elevate their level of play."

Despite the tough loss, LaFleur’s resolve is evident, and the Packers are now focused on making the necessary corrections in practice. The team will need to show significant improvement if they are to meet the expectations set for the 2025 season.
