The Green Bay Packers have confirmed that a seventh-round rookie will begin the 2025 NFL season on injured reserve after suffering an unfortunate injury during training camp.
The player, whose name has not been disclosed yet, had been battling for a spot on the team’s roster but now faces an uphill battle to make a return this season. The injury, which occurred during a non-contact drill, has sidelined the young prospect for an extended period, and the team has opted to place him on IR, officially ending his chances of being part of the opening-day roster.
“It’s tough for any rookie, especially one who was fighting to make a mark. Our hope is that he uses this time to fully recover and develop so he can come back stronger next year,” said Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.
The rookie had impressed coaches and teammates with his work ethic and potential during the early stages of camp, and many were hopeful for his future on the roster. While a seventh-round pick doesn’t guarantee a spot, the Packers’ history of developing late-round talent gave him a fighting chance to contribute immediately.
By placing him on IR, the Packers are not only protecting the player’s long-term health but also allowing themselves the flexibility to bring in another player to fill his spot for the 2025 season.
“It’s disappointing, but this isn’t the end for him. He’ll be back. The team believes in him, and his future is still very bright,” LaFleur added.
As the Packers continue to build their roster for a championship run, the focus will remain on the health and development of their players. The team will monitor the rookie’s progress and hopefully see him back on the field in the near future, continuing to pursue his dream in Green Bay.
