Panthers bolstering WR corps with one of the UFL’s top wideouts

The Carolina Panthers continue to emphasize surrounding second-year quarterback Bryce Young with more weapons.

The team is reportedly expected to sign 25-year-old receiver Daewood Davis, a standout receiver for the Memphis Showboats of the United Football League, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Davis was named to the All-UFL team on Wednesday after a breakout season in which he logged 41 receptions, 446 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games. He ranked second in the league in touchdowns, fourth in targets (70), sixth in receptions and seventh in yards.

A Conference-USA honorable mention during his senior season at Western Kentucky after four years with the Oregon Ducks, Davis finished his WKU tenure with 106 receptions, 1,635 yards and 15 touchdowns.

He signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent last year but was waived at the end of August after suffering an injury during the fourth quarter of a Week 3 preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Davis remained a free agent until signing with the UFL in October of last year.

Davis joins a revamped Panthers WR corps that added former Pittsburgh Steelers wideout Diontae Johnson and 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette out of South Carolina in addition to 2023 holdovers Jonathan Mingo (43 receptions, 418 yards), Terrace Marshall Jr. (19 receptions, 139 yards) and Adam Thielen, Carolina’s leading receiver last season (103 receptions, 1,014 yards, four TDs.)

Johnson is two years removed from a 107-catch, 1,161-yard season. He’s totaled 80 or more receptions and 700 or more yards in three of the last four seasons.

Legette was a Third Team All-American and First Team All-SEC selection last season after logging 71 receptions, 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns.
