Penguins Organization Signs Teammate of Top Prospect

The Pittsburgh Penguins organization signed three forwards to their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins roster, but one name should stick out more than the others. The WBS Penguins announced the signings of Gabe Klassen, Jack Beck, and Atley Calvert.

All three come from respective CHL teams, but Calvert has a brief history with the Penguins organization and a connection to a top name. Calvert plays with the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors, sharing a locker room with Penguins’ top prospect Brayden Yager.

Calvert and Yager both helped lead the Warriors to the franchise’s first ever WHL championship and fir appearance at the Memorial Cup. Calvert scored 47 goals and 95 total points in 68 games during the 2023-24 season.

Klassen was the captain of the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL in each of the last two seasons and scored 106 points in the 2023-24 season. For three straight years, Klassen has put up over 30 goals.

Beck was a sixth-round pick of the Calgary Flames in 2021 but is yet to play outside of the OHL. Prior to the 2023-24 season, Beck was moved to the Soo Ste. Marie Greyhounds where he put up 85 total points.

The Penguins have a slim prospect pool, but it seems to be growing all the time. These additions not only bring more depth to the pipeline, but creates more competition for some of the biggest names.

Calvert specifically also adds an element of familiarity for a top name like Yager. The two won’t play together with the WBS Penguins this upcoming season, but a friendly face to have around during prospect and training camps should continue to ease everyone into the organization.
