The Pittsburgh Penguins placed rookie defenseman Owen Pickering on injured reserve on Monday and recalled defenseman Nate Clurman from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.
Pickering, a left-handed shot, suffered an undisclosed ailment in a 3-0 road loss to the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.
Appearing in 14 NHL games this season, Pickering has scored two points (one goal, one assists) while averaging 15:47 of ice time per contest.
At the time of his injury, Pickering had been primarily skating on the top pairing with right-hander Kris Letang.
Clurman, 26, was recalled for the second time in the span of seven days. The Penguins summoned him from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Tuesday then reassigned him to the AHL affiliate one day later.
In his fifth professional season, the right-handed Clurman has never played in an NHL contest. With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, he has appeared 18 games and scored five points (one goal, four assists).
The Penguins signed Clurman to a one-year, two-way contract with a salary cap hit of $775,000 on July 1.
